Whilst potting up my tomato plants this afternoon, I noticed rather a lot of activity on the patch of meadow/lawn/weeds around the base of the bird table. Regular readers will know we have dozens of Goldfinches in the winter but usually at this time of year we see very few. However because we have a great crop of dandelions in our lawn it was amass with Goldfinches eating the seeds,,, See how many you can spot in the pictures below...
The answer is 4, 3 and 5...
What always amazes us is how these birds can stand on the most delicate of stems and happily feed as shown here...
It is great to see them around and know that our long grass has fed them for a while... When it dries up it will be cut and they will have to make do with the westerly edge and the hill which we always leave uncut and wild!

We called in this morning but you were presumably out. The front lawn is every bit as lush as the picture yesterday indicates!
Our chooks are doing a good job on consuming the dandelion heads, too!
Goldies are very entertaining birds...
fun to watch, pleasant to hear!
What a pity we missed you, Susan! We'd not gone far either... nothing that couldn't have waited!
Tim, we spend many an hour enjoying watching the goldfinch. Gret diversionary tactIc!
