Feeding the Tomatoes the Monty Don Way..

We are regular viewers of Gardeners' World, presented by Monty Don and last week he was making organic feed for his tomatoes.

Well, we thought.... If Monty can do it, so can we!

First to find the main ingredient - NETTLES, and plenty of them. According to Monty, you need to fill a bucket as tightly packed as possible with nettles. We have a limited supply in the chicken coop, so armed with leather gauntlets and wellies Elizabeth cut and collected..

That supply was soon exhausted and so it was off to find more locally. She had only just got to the edge of the wood when EUREKA! - there were all the nettles you could want, right by the path...

Back home, and having stuffed as many as possible into a bucket, it was time to add the other active ingredient - water..

We are able to use water from the well for garden purposes.

Filled to the top, the bucket now has to be left for one month.....

And as Monty Don said:
"Then we'll come back to it and I'll tell you how to use it on your tomatoes!"

I'm a big fan of nettle fertiliser, but boy does it smell. My dogs' farts are less potent and less long-lasting.

Yes, keep the bucket in the far corner of the garden!

You can also add Borage and Comfrey to the soup...

as that is a "paint container" bouquet...
for your own and your neighbours' sanity...
put the lid back on!!

Very gentlemanly of you to let Elizabeth battle the nettles!
