Green Bug Day

Today has been a "Green Bug Day" here. First to make an appearance was this gorgeously coloured specimen..

A quick search to attempt an identity left us none the wiser, so would welcome any thoughts, please.

Next came another Green Bug - we think this one's a Rosechafer.

At first it was almost hidden inside the peony flower where it seemed to be enjoying the nectar, but very obligingly it emerged for this photo shoot...

And what a lovely background the peony flower makes, too! They are really stunning while they last; it's just a pity they are over so soon. Still, there are plenty more flowers for the bugs to enjoy..

Your paeony muncher is indeed a Rose Chafer. They loooooooove paeonies. The first beetle is a Bupestrid of some sort judging by the last photo, but without doing some serious digging I couldn't tell you what species. It isn't in Chinery. The best way to ID it is to start by going to the Monde des Insectes galerie and trawl the Buprestidae photos (not very scientific, but effective usually, especially with follow up reading on any possibles). I'll do that later if I have time. I'd like to know what it is. It's a nice sighting anyway.

It's the Cypress Jewel Beetle Ovalisia festiva.

My Goodness, Susan! You're a star! I've been searching but hadn't managed to nail it. Thanks. It was quite a spectacular little beastie.

And it was amongst the stumps of the Cupressaceae Leylandii which used to stand across the front wall of the house when we moved in!

I had got to Bupestrid Beetles but no further... only got Chinery and Larousse [the latter being a Dorling Kindersley translation]... and the only match would have been the green version of B. 8-guttata in Chinery... but it wasn't quite right.

Then I opened the comments...
Well done Susan for diggin'...
