After our Jigsaw puzzle we have another puzzle that we would like solving...
On our Sunday walk, in the Gueule Noire above Panzoult, (more about that in another blog) we came across several dugouts at the side of this main woodland path.
Below are just three of many, sited adjacent to the main path (above). Each dugout is about 45cm deep and you can get an idea of the scale of the other dimensions from the photo of Elizabeth standing in the middle of one.
We wondered if they were to drain water from the woodland track, but they seem unnecessarily wide for that purpose. A narrower channel would surely suffice? Or are they something military?
Other than this we have no ideas? Have you??

I don't know, but do you want me to ask a couple of people who I reckon will know? The limestone ridges around Panzoult are fantastic for wildflowers in the spring and summer btw, and the dovecotes are a must see, as well as the interior of the church (painted).
Thank you, Susan. If you are able to ask, we'd be interested to find out.
I've asked two friends, one who lives not that far away and one who is a former forestry prof. Neither can shed any light. Their best guess is drainage and maybe the form is dictated by the wooded nature of the land and the clay soil. Otherwise, maybe some sort of access tracks that just happen to be flooded now it's very wet.
Susan, thank you very much for going to all that trouble. We'll go along with their suggestions then....or put them down as one of life's little mysteries!
