Tim, what does your rain gauge say?

The Vienne at Chinon this morning gave us quite a surprise.

It was unexpectedly high...

Almost to the top of the bridge pillars
 and beyond!

The Vienne says we have had more rain than we thought...

Well, Tim, how much!!!

32mm since Saturday....
just empathised the cylinder over a plant to record the NEXT lot!!
Not that the poor plant really needed any more water...

To look at a live satellite views from Sat24.Com...
go to the following three web links by cuttin' & pastin'...
[1] Map of France, UK and Northern 'Urop...
showing lightning!!

[2]View of 'Hole of 'Urop from Iceland to Africa [you can really see the systems working]

[ HTML ]...

this allows you to see just how much of a sunny/dry break you've got to nip to ye shoppes...
walk the hound...
do a bit of gardnin'...
et cetera, et cetera, ET Phone Home!!

[3] The above view but showing Rain and Lite-Nin'...
as I type, Turkey is getting a basting!

[ HTML ]

And with the weather forecasts from Meteo60 you get a ten day "forecast"... just enter your co-ordinates to get yours...
this is what we are expecting...

[ HTML ]

Right at the top you will see the following:

Vigilance mise à jour le 06/11/2013 à 16h01 : 28 dép. en jaune - Afficher la carte

Click on "Afficher la carte

That opens Meteo France's "Vigilance Météorologique" page...
this shows the departments under warnings [yellow, amber and get in the car and drive... fast (red)]...
down at the bottom of this page is the "Vigilance Crues" link...
this takes you to a map of France showing the different cachement areas for the main river systems...
as I type the Vienne past Chinon is showing "yellow"...
you will see on the SPC Vienne-Thouet "basin", a selection small pairs of squares....
these are readings points... Chinon, unsurprisingly is the last marker before the Loire...
pass the mouse over and the pointer turns into a finger with "Chinon (Vienne)" beside it...
click on that link and you get a graph of the last three days measurements up to the present...
each square on the curve gives you the height above zero/normal in metres [for most]...
and various "flood records" are marked as lines across the graph...
from this I can tell you that the Vienne started to rise just before midnight 3rd into 4th November...
by the following Midnight it had risen to 79cm above the norm...
again as I type it is at 3.35 metres above normal....
having peaked at 3.44 metres at 1AM this morning....
the reference flood level at Chinon [recorded 18/12/2012] is 4.37 metres...
what you don't get is what height it breaks the banks at!

Some have three or four "Crues de référence" at different heights...
but they never tell you when to get your wellies on and the inflatable inflated!!

Well, you did ask!!

It looks rather different from when we were last there, less than three weeks ago!

No different in this wet and cold corner of Staffordshire!

The Claise is high too, with water on low lying fields adjoining. I took a photo in the rain yesterday. The soil must be close to 100% saturation again.

Susan,
I dug some more potatoes today...
or should that be rescued...
just a row...
and the soil was so wet and claggy that I am sure that I must have missed some in that row...
and the only way that I'll get them clean is with a powerhose!!!
There was visible water at a fork's depth...
not much....
but if you dug a bit deeper...
you could hear squelching!!
Bleeeearch!!!!!!!!!

Aigronne Valley is a series of disconnected, shallow ponds...
but the Herons like it!!!
