RSPB Birdwatch 2015

Over this weekend we took part in the RSPB Birdwatch for 2015. (For full details, just follow the link.)

We are lucky to have a constant stream of feathered visitors to the garden in England as well as back in Braye. One of  our favourites is the wren. Usually so hard to catch on camera because of its speed, today it was happy to feed just outside the study window. The first photo shows the white of the window-sill, so you can see just how close it was!

It stayed around long enough for us to get a number of close up shots.

What a delightful little bird it is!

Wrens sure are cute little beasties.

Baron doesn't think that wrens are sweet at all!
He thinks...
probably thought...
that, because they spend a lot of time hopping around in the vegetation....
that they are rodents!
The one that made an involuntary, but very close inspection, of Baron's tonsils two years back...
just won't let him forget...
and buzzes him!!
And shouts at him!
And attacks him!
And Baron just has to slink off elsewhere!!!
We know it is the same one...
we call him RedWren as he is the reddest, rustiest wren that I have ever seen.

And while the books say there is no difference between the sexes....
there is!
The males are smaller and redder than the larger and greyer females...
but this normally only visible in sunshine in the breeding season...
but RedWren is the brightest I have ever seen....
and seems to keep his bright rustiness all year round.
He might not be with us for much longer, sadly...
the average life of a wren is only three years...
and he has passed that, now.
But he looked feisty enough when he flew at Baron on Saturday last!
