The Goldfinch with aspirations....

Word soon got around that there are Niger Seeds in the bird feeder and now we have a small flock of Goldfinch in the garden.

Today we saw some different behaviour from one of them...

It landed on the post which supports the bird table and took advantage of a weak point in the bark...

and before we knew it the bark was shredded like paper...

Presumably it had found a food supply.

When it flew off the extent of the damage was revealed...

Strange, considering there is a ready supply of Niger Seeds for it to eat.....

Perhaps this one thinks it's a woodpecker!

I've no idea what it was after...
unless...
there were some insects trying to hibernate behind the bark!!
As you don't mention it flying off with any of the strippings....
I am discounting it insulating a roost...
or even having a fourth brood!!
Yes, this weather has confused the hell out of some of the boids...
Pauline saw a Sparrow carrying a faecal sac last week...
the poor chicks are unlikely to survive, tho...
shame.

Tim, I didn't notice it flying off with any strips of bark so, like you, I would discount insulating a roost... Must be after grubs!
