and we want them to remain that way... 2014 appears to have been another good year for our hazelnut tree, it is absolutely full of nuts.
Regular readers will know we have had problems in the past with a greater spotted woodpecker pinching our hazelnuts.
But for the last two years we have deployed our man and the nuts have survived intact... Today he was brought out of storage to do his work...
Some may say it's 'Simon's annual errection' We would decline to comment!!
Now we have the wildlife camera we will be able to monitor the situation more closely and also to see what he gets up to when we are away!!

Numerous rude comments spring to mind, but suffice it to say, I hope your scarecrow keeps the birds away from your nuts!
Pardon me for asking -- I'm sure the answer is perfectly logical -- but why does your scarecrow have Simon's features?
Now motorize Simon....
so that he randomly spins like a whirling dervish....
That would surely stop anything from pecking at your nuts!!
Susan, it was my sense of humour. When the scarecrow was created in 2012 I wanted something tall and scary... He has worked well ever since. If it offends either of you... it's a bit late now!!! BUT I could make him more scary and put a David Cameron likeness instead...
His first appearance...

The woodpecker went after my cherries, too. Little blighter! We'll have to put up one of these, if it works for your cobnuts it should work for our filberts.
