The Ball-Rolling Beetle is one of the illustrations in Fabre... I'll go and get my book and check them against these... the mantis looks familiar, too. I wonder if he got paid twice?
Having looked, the ball rolling beetles illustration and the mantis picture are similar to, but NOT the same as those he used to illustrate Farbre's book. So he earnt his money, then! A great illustrator... and very detailed too.

They are absolutely amazing! I can see why this book was such a treasure!
