Dragonflies

It is the time of year for them and this one was a real poser...

Despite having bought a new book (secondhand) determination of species is proving difficult and our best guess is its a member of Libellulidae as it has dissimilar triangles on front and fore wings and is non metalic...

More study needed... We do like the photographs though!

These greenery yallery libellulids are always a nightmare. I would say, based on your excellent photos that allow me to see clearly all but the top of the thorax (which would have been useful in that it might have eliminated for sure the Black Darter Sympetrum danae) that this is an immature female Ruddy Darter S. sanguineum. It has entirely black legs, so that alone leaves you with only these two species (or the very rare Spotted Darter S. depressiusculum). I've seen a lot of Ruddys lately, and they are much more widespread than the Blacks. The wing venation and touch of colour and abdomen tip all seem a better match for Ruddy than Black.
