Snow clearing birds

With the current covering of snow and with more forecast for tomorrow our garden birds are eating us out of house and home. In payback for us putting out feed the Goldfinches have taken to doing a bit of snow clearing for us... Unbelievable that small birds have actually cleared a good covering of snow.

Meanwhile on the well the Greenfinches were out in force...

Our favourite, the Green Woodpecker, was finding the frozen ground difficult to say the least but you have to give him full marks for trying...

The Redwing wasn't faring much better...

These two appeared to be more interested in cuddling up than eating...

And our windowsill feeders - WELL they're just cute!

Our big problem is the birdbath, it freezes over as fast as we unfreeze it! Love that last photo. Diane

At least, with the bief directly behind the feeders, we don't have a problem with the lack of water.... the birds can feed at the edge. If you look on the Aigronne Valley Wildlife blog, you will see that I've renamed the Pic Vert... I now call it the Green Groundpecker!! Lovely pictures, we've yet to see Redwing or Fieldfare this year...:-(

Love the new header.

Who'd have thought such little birds have that much body heat and snow clearing power.

The robin was waiting for me at the hen house this morning, puffed up like a tennis ball...he was well rewarded.
