Burping boxes...

Whatever happened to Tupperware parties in the UK? Are they just a distant memory or still out there and thriving??

We hadn't considered Tupperware until, on a recent visit to Auchan, we were greeted with a vision from the past!

These 'Tupperladies' were busy setting up a display in honour of Tupperware's 50th Anniversary....

Even before they had finished displaying their wares customers were coming to admire and handle the goods.

I asked my brother, George, if he has seen Tupperware advertised recently in the UK but he didn't think he had. However an internet search today showed that Tupperware relaunched in the UK in 2011 after closing down there in 2003 citing customer dissatisfaction with its direct sales model as an issue. What a balm to the soul to know that Tupperware is alive and kicking - on this side of the Channel at least!

However, there is some debate about the product. Is it a gift to women, offering opportunities both for employment and socialising or does it further domesticate them?

What a heavy burden for a plastic box that 'burps' to bear!

I have not seen a tupperware party this century I don't think. They used to be quite popular in South Africa. Diane

And I thought my late MiL had bought out all their surplus stock ..........
Still problems with comments even when I am signed in unless I access via dashboard.

Please note that the 'antique' Tupperware that is on every vide-grenier stall is just as good as the new stuff [and sometimes better thought out!]
Couldn't live without the burpit boxes.

How amazing, I've been invited to a tupperware party at my neighbours next week.

I feel as though I'm in a time warp.

A very late follow-up to say that the hoped-for relaunch didn't happen in 2011, but in fact Tupperware products have always been available in the UK (in a combined market with Ireland) except for two short periods in 2003 and 2011. The compnay itself hasn't had a corporate office in either country for some years, but an importer-distributor in Dublin supplies Tupperware ladies (and men -- see www.tupperwareman.co.uk) up and down the UK.
