Canada Geese on the Ribble

One of our regular walks when we are back in the UK is along the banks of the river Ribble from West Bradford to Grindleton. Going down one side and then returning up the other.  On Sunday there was very little water in the river and it was as low as we have seen it for a long time

A view of the village of Chatburn with Pendle Hill in the background. The day was somewhat misty!

What did surprise us was the sight of several Canada Geese on the river.

We can only assume that they are just passng through, although the internet indicates that they are resident in England. We will keep an eye out next time we do the walk.

Are you seriously saying you've never seen Canada Geese before!? They are everywhere around London, I was always dodging CG poo. But maybe they don't normally make it up north -- I guess Tim will know. I notice the RSPB map shows them everywhere except the north of Scotland.

They make it up north OK....
bleedin'pests!
And they have reached the River Thurso in Caithness...
and that was twenty years ago...
They aren't passing through, they aren't migratory in the UK...
expanding, yes!!
To the point that there is talk of needing to cull....
they are causing problems for our winter migratory geese through competition for same food sources.

We have never noticed them on the Ribble before... I am sure we would have. All we usually see are Mallards, 100's of em... If the CG eat well the local poachers will probably reduce the population!!!

As Colin said, we're simply saying we've never seen them in such numbers of the Ribble before.Interestingly my brother saw a fly past of a number of Canada Geese this morning heading south across the Fylde.
