When we first moved in to La Croix Blanche we had a rather large Leylandii hedge which was totally beyond doing anything with other than a total prune...
On a recent visit to Gaynor and Tim's in La Petit Pressigny, Tim pointed out what I can only describe as the perfect Leylandii hedge...
Judge for yourselves...
Ours was once like this... I wish... I can only say this 'Homme' has tooooo much time on his hands.... Close up there is not a leaf out of place!
"Elizabeth where are the scissors!!"
I always look at this sort of thing and think 'why didn't he build a wall?'
ReplyDeleteSusan... because it wouldn't have birds nesting in it... or a huge amount of insects and spiders there either!!
DeleteI need a Tim .......I think one would be very useful. This is incredibly impressive.
ReplyDeleteJanice,
DeleteThere's my Tim and Pauline's Tim. Neither has a hedge like this one!
The house is for sale though...
Cut like this, I doubt if it is actually Leyladii... probably one of the other, slower growing, non-hybrid Cypress... or even Thuja plicata... much easier to train... doesn't need whips or electric prods!!
ReplyDeleteAlso please note... the tallest Leyland Cypress presently documented, growing in Powys, is over 130 ft (40 metres) in height and still growing... you were very sensible to get rid of them!!
But they do have their uses... they are a fabulous 'first growth' shelter to establish less hardy trees behind... and then get clear felled!!
Also looking at this hedge, one expects all pencils to be in a row on the desk in size order and every bit of furniture to be an exact distance from two, possibly three, walls!!
We have about ten overgrown leylandii in our back garden in England. They are enormous and have no redeeming value. But can I get my husband to get rid of them? No! No! and No! The hedge in your pictures does look beautiful, but I do wonder if it is not something else.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the house owners are related to Hyacinth Bouquet ??!!
ReplyDeleteCould be, Jean. It's certainly not us!!
DeleteWhenever we visit it is always like this! One day I'll post a pic of the other hedge in Le Petit-Pressigny...
